Located in the 'landscape city' of Potsdam the former warehouse district 'Speicherstadt' forms an area with a very specific contextual complexity. Listed buildings like the Persiusspeicher and the warehouse designed by Schinkel, two main borderlines and an exciting and demanding program are some of the constraining but inspiring elements.
The design scheme creates a strong urban image that embeds itself into the historical ensemble of Potsdam. The clear simple composition allows for future programmatic changes simultaneously offering urban life experiences and landscape impressions.

The design extrapolates the character and qualities of the Speicherstadt; with its naive, obviously not planned composition and its calm and quiet gestalt. The particular landscape situation and shape of the site between the Brauhausberg and the River Havel offers the starting point. The existing transparency crossing the whole site is maintained so that its alternating depth can be experienced. The surrounding with its landscape qualities, is orchestrated for the visitor from within the site.
Existing and new buildings are anchored along the edges of the site. Public buildings occupy the centre. Offices and housing in the former warehouses are placed at the margins. Squares along the water edge and the entree are formed by spatial widenings. Beneath the whole site an underground level offers parking for 1.500 cars and delivery for trucks and buses.
